Discover the three hidden secrets of the poker playing professional

by Colton Cruise

Did you know that you could learn the hidden secrets of poker professionals that make them successful? Read this article to discover three of the pro’s secrets!

What’s the difference between an amateur and a professional when it comes to poker playing? Professionals consistently win. Do you want to win like a pro? Professional poker players are professionals for a good reason – their professionals. They weren’t always that way. They learnt from poker players that were more advanced and discovered hidden traits that make them the best. Here are three hidden traits I have discovered that separates amateurs and professionals. These three traits will dramatically increase your earnings. Lets get to it and learn them.

Do you read minds?

Hidden secret number one: Professional poker players know how to read players. The better you are at reading the more you will understand how to play against them. I’m not talking about behavioral twitches, which is not available for you online. But you need to consider their raising, folding, re-raising, and other habits on the table. Do they fold early on? Do they fold when you bet big all of the time. Were they bluffing from the flop, but got lucky on the river or turn? You need to be aware of their betting habits, and professionals know how to do this. Practice online or with friends on your poker night. Beware though: practicing online to learn this skill will require real money, because people do not react the same way with “play money”. Most people do react the same way with real money, practice and pick this skill up. This will save you a lot of money in losses, and take your poker revenues sky high.

Don’t flood the market

Hidden secret number two: Professional poker players don’t bet on every hand. Poker players that have

constant success take their time and don’t flood bets in. They are confident in their skills to read players that they don’t have to bet on every “possible” hand they could get. They usually bet on hands like pocket aces, or high suited cards. Don’t make the mistake that I use to make and bet because I had royalty. I usually would bet on a Q,9 or a J,8 I have found that cards like this, don’t pay off. It is rare that they will pay off however. When you show others that you’re not betting on any old thing that comes through, your bets will have more weight and you’ll be considered more conservative. So when you do bet, and bluff, you will be taking more seriously. Learning this secret has enabled my poker wins to jump, even when some people don’t bet against me. Remember the price of something goes up if its rare, if you bet rarely, it will be weighted more.

Just a little bit

Hidden secret number three: Professional poker players rarely rush in to a hand. How often do you see pro’s betting within a 2-minute time frame on ESPN? There’s a reason for this. It confuses the opposing player. They are thinking, “Does he have a good hand?” “Why is he taking so long?” “What is he considering?” This technique only helps your chances. To through a spanner in the works, professionals sometimes bet a hand quickly to throw people off. It is gold! Master it and you can really make your poker personality known. There are a lot more poker secrets for you to discover. They are hidden from view, but are valuable enough to make you serious money.

The Biggest Secret of Online Poker

Of all the tips I've received during my three years of playing poker online, only one stands above the rest - have patience. Patience is what will make or break Internet players and bring in the money.
It is common to occasionally encounter cold runs of cards for weeks, and a good poker player learns how to ride it out. A general poker rule is that playing too high of a limit will bust you really fast, but playing impatiently will bust you even faster.
Professional Poker Players Are Extremely Patient

You won't find a professional poker player who's impatient because poker is a game won over the long run. There's just enough luck involved in poker to keep the fish coming back, but the best players know the game comes with more highs and lows than the stock market and the most rewarding plan is to stay steady and play consistently.
I've heard that it can take over 1, 400 hours of play before you can expect to make a profit. While I don't believe this is completely true, I do believe that poker should be taken month by month. If you played well and consistently, each month should return a profit.
Occasionally, you'll have a horrible streak and may lose for the month. If you find yourself losing month after month, ask yourself if patience could be your problem.
There are two types of impatience:
  1. Betting too much on busted hands
  2. Playing too many hands
Betting Too Much on Busted Hands

Even if you only play the best hands, you can still be impatient. You could be putting too much money in on busted hands. For example, say you raise kings and receive three callers. You see an ace hit the flop and bet anyway. You get re-raised and know you're beat. Good players know to lie this down. Impatient players won't recognize that their hand is busted, and will keep playing it as if it's the nuts.
While you want to push good hands hard, you never want to be dead money. If you totally miss your flop with ace-king, don't go crazy; live to fight another day.
Playing Too Many Hands

You could also be playing too many hands. Staring at your computer screen for an eight hour session of poker can be boring. This causes some people to get tired and loosen up their playing too much; it becomes easier to click the call button rather than stay alert in the game.
The best advice I have for combating the fatigue and boredom that can accompany long poker sessions, is to only play when you're alert since it's your best defense against new players. Otherwise, you'll most likely become uninterested in playing your best poker and look for luck as the way out. Learn to log out or leave the casino when you feel tired.

Secret To Become An Online Poker Pro

If you want to become a poker pro, you need to realize one very important thing about poker- that it is not a source of easy money; it is your business. Therefore, there has to be a complete perspective-shift and love for the game of poker. It is a great game and it opens a number of avenues for poker professionals. Thus the possibilities in the realm of poker are endless but you need to put in a lot of effort and time to be a successful poker professional.

The secret to success in poker is your expertise over the game. You need to be hundred-percent alert about the moves of the other players. This is an indispensable requirement in order to do well as a poker pro online. Poker professional and magician Antonio Esfandiari has mastered these skills perfectly!

Poker does not take place in vacuum. It involves two important factors- money and time. If you want to be an established poker professional, you need to take this business seriously and manage your bankroll carefully. The game involves good amount of money and thus you cannot afford to be casual about it in any way. If you are bad at bankroll management, then it is likely that you will end up being a sloppy player. So, avoid such loss and manage your money and investment right.

One important thing- if you want to become a full time poker player; in other words if you are thinking of running your life on poker entirely, then you must know that you will be working under a lot of pressure. If you are the kind of person who has an immense sense of security, patience and is cool, then you can try out being a full time pro. Otherwise, it is always better to play poker part-time. A secret to becoming a rich poker professional is to not panic and be able to think coolly at the hottest points of the game. Panic is not good for poker and thus you need to be calm while playing it.

Again, if you really want to consistently profit out of poker, then you need to have a balance in life. You need to know when exactly you should be quitting a game. People often pin their faith on luck, get greedy and end up losing a lot of money. This is definitely not a good idea. There is a pattern witnessed typically in many players- they do extremely well initially but go down later simply because they got excited and carried away. You need to hold on to the balance that would retain your self-composure and maturity as player.

Thus the basic secret is - play right and more importantly, do not overplay. Online poker is a fantastic means of earning money. It is fun but you need to be really focused on the objective of fair gaming. A professional approach to begin with, is a pre requisite in order to become a professional in the world of online poker.

Online Poker Secrets - Help Improve your Game

In this guide i hope to open your eyes to a few of the top secrets of the online poker world, in the aim of improving your game. There is a well known saying amongst poker players which if having watched WPT or WSOP events live you may well be familiar with. "You can learn how to play poker in 15 minutes. Learning how to play poker well can take a lifetime". If there is one saying that you remember,

well this isn't a bad one. Poker really is a complex game for those looking to master it. There are many different facets to the game and many different ways in which the game can be played, some profitable and others not. It is important that as you play, you also continue to improve. The only way you can do this is by reading books, blogs, forums, getting involved in discussions or reading up on some leading tips and suggestions that you can take on board to help your game. This article is aimed at those little gems that aren't so obvious, the reason we aptly included the word 'Secrets' in the article.
The truth of the matter is that a large number of players lose money online because they opt to run before they can crawl. Many have to lose money before they concede they aren't gods gift to poker. Sometimes confidence comes at a price. Throwing your money around before you fully understand certain key concepts likebluffing, value betting, expected value and the use of odds to support your decisions, is likely only going to have one result. Yes, it is important to be confident, however there is a distinct difference between confidence, arrogance and stupidity. Start small and when you remain profitable at a level, only then should you look to move up to higher stakes.
Online poker requires a different approach to that of playing in Brick and Mortar games (live) and learning the secrets of playing poker online will increase your potential to win and your bottom line return on investment.

Online Poker Secret # 1 - Preparation

Understanding the differences between online poker and playing live is important. First and foremost, it is important to understand how your state of mind differs when your playing online. So, before we go any further, let's talk about state of mind before you sit down to play. Let's for a moment imagine that you are traveling to a land based tournament. From the second you step out of your house, all the way to the casino, you are mentally preparing for the contest. Even waiting in the lobby, talking to other players, you are getting in the frame of mind needed to play your best game. It is also very true that the build up to a live tournament can be an exhilarating one - all the time getting you ready to play your best game. By the time you actually see your first hand, a couple of hours might have passed and having had all that time to mentally get in the right frame of mind, you are ready for the challenge.
Let's now imagine the preparation you undergo before playing online. You make a cup of coffee, switch on the computer....the phone rings, it's a double glazing salesman who you finally manage to convince that you are not interested (not that that happens!). Your PC loads and then you double click your site icon and open up your room. Find a tournament and your off. Now compare the preparation and state of mind between the two examples. You only have to look at how real this scenario is, to appreciate the difference. Many players do not appreciate that you will only play your best poker when your mind is in the state to do so. Go for a walk around the block, have 10 min's quiet time .....disconnect the phone. Seem too much? You wouldn't blink an eye doing this at a live tournament, so what's the difference? It might cost the same amount to enter the tournament. Play to win - don't underestimate the value of mind set when playing poker. It is hugely important to make sure that you prepare mentally, keep distractions to an absolute minimum and you are in comfortable surroundings. You want to give yourself every chance to play well.

Settings and surroundings whilst playing online poker

Ensure that everything is set up to keep distractions to a minimum. This can be settings on your PC or something in your house. Do you want to hear the noise of virtual chips going into each pot? Well how about the phone ringing, or your friend typing messages to you on Skype? Some people are distracted easily, others not. You know yourself better than anyone. Over time you will develop your own set of preferences, the reason they are called preferences. The onus is really on you to work out the optimal conditions that induce you to play your a-game. Some things which you wouldn't think would annoy you actually will, so play about a little and figure out what works and what doesn't. Don't assume that you like the sound on or off...try it both ways.
Likewise, most of the top poker rooms offer a chat box, a small window in which you or other players can chat to other players on the table. Most of the chat is limited to abbreviations like "nh" (nice hand) "ty " (thank you) or "yw" (your welcome) - and a few less polite ones but i won't go into that here. Some players will use this chat box do induce bad play (tilt) as part of their strategy. It can seem an easy prospect to ignore players chat but at times when a player is upset by a run of cards you can see some demoralizing comments. Some players can handle comments, whilst others can be affected by nasty comments. It is therefore a good idea to turn this option off to avoid the possibility of distraction. That way, you don;t have to worry about it.
Another key area to be aware of is that your computer is most probably located in a room common with many other activities that you undertake in that room on a day to day basis. Try (if possible) to move your PC or Laptop to an area that is associated with the least distractions that you can achieve. If you have a study, close the door. The common player does not put any thought into distractions, however they often have an effect. You can't be playing your a-game when the phone rings every 20 minutes. Minimizing distractions is key to having a winning frame of mind.

Online Secret 2 - At the table Pre-action buttons

Some pre-action buttons should not be used unless you are tying to induce a bluff. Don't play down the importance of these buttons or the story on table that they tell about the cards that you have in your hand. Use them only when there is a reason to.

Muck Button

For instance...you have the option to muck lost or losing hands. It is not uncommon for players not to use the 'Auto Muck' button even showing hands to their opponents from time to time. If you play a hand to the river, don't win and end up showing players that you went to the river with rags you will be attracting unwanted attention from the observant players on the table, and you will lose both respect and your ability to bluff. Good players play to the river when the outs justify the play - showing your cards when you have called a number of bets when then the outs were not even close to justifying your contributions will only make you look weak. As soon as this happens you will spend your time fighting to win pots and defending your blinds. The ONLY way to avoid this - never show your cards.

Don't show bluffs unless you have a plan!

Don't show your bluffs!Similarly, never show that you bluff all the time. Showing your 2-3 off suit might seem like a good idea at the time, but start thinking about the long term. Whilst you may feel like a legend on that hand having pushed a good player off the hand with utter rags, the very fact that he is a good player does not bode well for your prospects. Having won the hand you perhaps command some respect....show your 2 3 off-suit and you are far less likely to get away with similar bluffs on that table. This is an important point as you won't win a tournament or cash game if you can't get away with bluffing. Even small ball poker will be a challenge as your opponents will be calling you with weaker hands than they would otherwise have done. Successful bluffing requires your opponent to give you credit for a hand. If they know you bet with any two cards, this is considerably more difficult. Should a player on your table ask you to show, which they will from time to time, just muck your cards. You are under no obligation to show your cards. Why show the player he made a good fold - this will only improve his state of mind. It is much better for you that he is frustrated through not knowing whether he laid the best hand down.
Players who have been pushed about and lost a few pots, particularly where they thought they should have won, will from time to time begin betting irrationally (go on tilt). Inducing this irrational play from players can be very profitable as they will either play the right hands badly, will play from the wrong spots or commit too many chips to situations that don't warrant their contribution.
To look at an example, let's imagine you hit your trips on the flop and you bet heavily all the way, with your opponent calling you to the river. You force one final bet and your opponent folds to a bulging pot. Your opponent now doesn't know whether he has been bluffed or not - put simply, he won't be best pleased. What's more this will play on his mind and distract him from playing his best game. You show your trip Queens. Do you think your opponent feels better or worse? Your opponent likely had worse that trips or he would have called so the likelihood is that you have made him feel a whole lot better for making such a good lay down.
You are not there to make your opponents feel good about their game. You want to keep them guessing and try to infuriate them by mixing up your game. Don't show your cards!

Raise / Check Buttons

The raise and check buttons can equally give a huge amount of information away about your hand. Don't use them unless you intend to mislead your opponents. Let's look at an example. You are last to act in a $20-$40 game of Hold'em and you hold pocket aces. You have raised pre flop and have got callers. The flop comes A-K-4 rainbow. You have the following choices in terms of pre-action buttons:
Check / Fold
Check / Call
Raise Any

A little bit of a relief seeing the Ace. You know that you have flopped a huge hand and you also know that you will likely raise any bet that comes your way. You check the pre-raise button which automatically raises any bet when the action get's to you. Observant opponents will realize that you could be sitting on a huge hand as you raised so quickly. They will now know that you were prepared to raise any bet (especially if you weren't first to act - as you didn't know the first player wasn't going to raise), conclude that the hand is not worth playing and stay away from it which will mean that you win less money. Regardless of whether you hit a monster hand or air, take your time - make it look like it isn't an easy decision.
You can however have some fun using these buttons. At times you can use them when you have a weak hand, trying to represent a monster. You do need to be careful - what if the player acting before you goes all in!

Online Poker Secret #3 Game Selection

When you playing online poker for the first time, it is better to just focus on learning how to play the game. Play games you are familiar with, at least until you develop the basic skills. You are not going to be much competition for good players at the game, especially if you lack certain abilities in general as a poker player. If you would like an introduction to the games that are available online, check out ourpoker games section. Alternatively we have a massive selection of easy to understand poker rules which go over the rules of your game and the order of play.

Online Poker Secret #4 - Virtual Chips

Virtual chips have the same value online!Playing with virtual chips can be a tricky one . They don't exist any any form other than on your computer screen as a graphic. Try to compare the two experiences, firstly sitting in a Casino you make a physical exchange, taking cash from your wallet that you got from the ATM, handing over the cash and receiving your playing chips. You will likely then do a quick count to make sure you have been given the right value of chips. While you are at the table watching your stack fall or grow and you are fully aware of the relationship between the chips and the amount of money they represent. You therefore respect your chips and their value. You will also likely base some of your decisions on the amount of chips you have.
Online, this relationship is abstract. You cannot feel the chips, you didn't need to go to the bank, withdraw from an ATM or put your hand in your wallet to get cash. The value of money online can be somewhat hidden, however your virtual chips still represent real money. Many players, especially those fairly new to the scene will find it difficult exercising this control, however it is essential to ensure you maintain control over your game. Virtual or real, money is money. It has the same value whether online or not. so give your chips the same respect. Remember, a loss online has the same value to a loss anywhere else!

Managing your moods

Unlike playing poker in a Brick and Mortar game, you have the perfect opportunity, playing online, to better manage your moods. Playing face to face, when a player sees a chink in your armour you will likely be put to the test. Online, no-one will see any mood swings unless you make it very obvious (typing in the chat box). It is still important to control your moods as a bad mood will mean you aren't playing your a-game, which is what you need to be doing.
This is however only part of it. We talked already about the importance of finding your a-game and some tips in setting up an environment that is conducive to this. If you are in a bad mood, you will not be playing your best game so the best advice i can give you is to stay away from the tables. You have an advantage playing online as you can get up and walk around or shout at the screen and no-one will be the wiser. Don't let your pride get in the way of your bankroll. When you feel like you should get up and leave a game, do it. You will probably never see half the players at the table again so no-one will be the wiser. What's more, leaving a table could be down to anything so don't read anything into it. You're not obliged to play for a second longer than you feel is right.

Take a look at your inner self

Well i have given you some of the key secrets to playing online. You know yourself better than anyone so you're the best person to understand what makes you play well, what angers you and what distracts you. Make a list, write them down and have them somewhere that is visible (maybe next to your PC). Doing this will ensure you play within an environment that helps you play the best poker that your abilities allow. It's often the little things that others overlook that make the difference between profit and loss.

Some Basic Tips for Online Play

Sometimes you’re running bad, or maybe you’re just playing bad. Sometimes it’s a combination of both. Running bad can put you on tilt subconsciously, which leads to poor play. But when your poker results start to suffer, particularly in online play where good players will take more than their share of bad beats, sometimes you need to step back and re-assess your play.

I’ve found that, most of the time, simply freeing myself of distractions and other influences that might affect my mind-set is the most effective way to renew my focus and see improved results. Here are a few tips that have worked for me:
Eliminate distractions ahead of time – This means turning off the TV, telephone and keeping the music down to a low volume. If you have children or pets to take care of, make sure their needs are met before you play.
Develop a routine – This means everything from signing up the same time before a tournament to sitting in the same seat position at the table. Every time I play, I click the “sit here” option on the bottom seat exactly in the middle. This helps me focus, as I never have to change my eye level and look for my seat, as I always felt a little awkward if my seat was in a corner position or at the top. Plus, just getting into a routine this way helps me focus on the game at hand.
Be prepared to play – This covers everything from being rested, showered and focused, to making sure you have no time commitments that are going to get in the way. If you are playing a multi-table tournament with 2,000 participants, you should anticipate that you will be playing for the next 5 hours or so. Clear your schedule. Do not play if you have another imminent time commitment. Also, make sure you have eaten and used the bathroom before you start. Just as is in live games, failure to do this will result in you missing potentially valuable hands at the table. The breaks are short; make sure you have snacks or beverages readily prepared so you can re-fuel in a timely fashion.
Eliminate distractions at the table – In addition to sitting in the same spot each time, I recommend turning off all avatar images and avoiding chat at all costs. Many avatar images appear intended to distract you and, let’s face it, some of them do. Whether it’s a picture of a bikini-clad, buxom model that has your attention, or some other sort of violent or semi-graphic image, it’s relatively easy to have your attention drawn to these images. Eliminate that possibility by shutting them off. Also, keep chatting to a minimum. If your opponent chats “nh” or “nice hand” after losing a pot to you and you believe his sentiment is sincere, a “ty” or “thank you” is acceptable, but do not draw out the conversation. If he is clearly being sarcastic, ignore him. Resist the temptation to engage in personal battles, even if someone types an offensive sentiment such as “nice call, donkey.” Engaging in prolonged chats will only distract you from the game and task at hand, and could possibly put you on tilt. Leave tilting to your opponents.
Follow the general rule of HALT – That is, do not play if you are hungry, angry, lonely or tired. As previously stated, make sure you are fed if you intend to play a long tournament. If you are angry, from taking bad beats or for some other personal reasons, it’s never a good idea to play because you will have a compromised mindset. Playing to kill time before you go to bed is usually a bad idea, too, as you will have less-than-optimal focus and be tempted to make plays you normally wouldn’t make.
Play better than your opponents – Isn’t this always the goal when you play? Of course, but this is meant in the most basic sense. Online players notoriously play too many hands, try too many ill-advised bluffs and overvalue and overplay starting hands. They refuse to fold when they clearly are beat, and shove all-in when they clearly are behind. The masses are asses … don’t be one of them. Don’t lose sight of the fact that patience is still a key virtue in poker. Many new players seem to crave instant gratification, and all it leads to is an early bust-out. So let everyone else ram-and-jam in every pot, and put all their chips in the middle on a three-outer. You, meanwhile, sit back and pick your spots. Be selective about your starting hands, and don’t be afraid to fold when you are beat. Don’t make foolish calls or push with marginal hands just because you’ve been running cold. You’d be surprised how huge an advantage a little patience will give you over your opponents.

Top Ten Secrets of Professional Online Poker Players

Use Sound Bankroll Management

Many poker pros have wild swings and end up bankrupt. Correctly managing your bankroll is the most important skill in poker. Play lower limits when you lose and only attempt higher limits after a good run. Do not be afraid to change limit up and down as frequently as necessary. Always play in games that you can afford.

Focus on Making Good Decisions

Good decisions in poker do not always lead to a profit. The statistical poker edge of a good decision is sometimes just a few percent chance, so that you will lose nearly as often as you win when following your decision. Do not let results affect you. Just focus on making the good decision and profits will follow.
Raise or Fold, do not Call

This rule can be hard to follow literally, but it should be your goal to get as close as possible. The weakest decision in poker is calling, which is synonym with passive play. Avoid it like the plague. If your hand is strong you must take the lead by betting or raising. Otherwise, just fold.

Make Continuation Bets

It is vital to make continuation bets otherwise it is like telegraphing that you missed the flop. Make your c-bets against solid observant opponents, but be more cautious against calling stations. The optimal c-bet rate is around 70-80%. A lower rate makes you too transparent whilst a higher rate makes you too much of an obvious bluffer.

Make Value Bets

A lot of your potential profits come from value betting, especially river value betting. Value betting consists in making bets, hoping to get called by a weaker hand. It requires good hand reading skills and also courage because there is always the risk to be raised, check-raised, bluff-raised or shoved.

Use Software Tools

Online poker is a very competitive game and you must use the software tools that your opponents are using. Poker tracker systems are mandatory. Odds calculator, online database and poker coaching tools can also help. Check our poker software reviews for a complete list of what is currently available in the market.

Review Your Hands

After each poker session that you play, try reviewing your hands with a hand replayer software. Analyze your mistakes and determine alternative ways it could have been played. If time is short, focus on the biggest losses and profits of your session. Post your most confusing hands on online poker forums to generate comments or discuss them with your poker buddies.

Don't be Emotional

You must develop the mental strength necessary to always play analytically, and not emotionally. Your emotions are your enemies at the poker tables. Your emotions will almost never make you money at poker, but very often will make you lose money. If you take a bad beat and start tilting, just leave the tables.

Use Position

Position is often more important than your hole cards. Make the most out of your position. Learn to bluff more in position and to fold more out of position. Steal aggressively from the cutoff and button. If in position, do not miss an oportunity to exert pressure on your opponents.

Don't be Predictable

Do not play predictably. This sounds like a truism, but you have to introduce randomness into your game so that your opponents can never put you on a hand. Always have a few ways to play the same situation. For example when you have AA UTG, you may raise 80% of the time and limp 20% of the time in order to induce raisers. Use the seconds of your clock to make the decision. If the seconds of your watch are between zero and 12 you limp, otherwise you raise. If this sounds like it may be a problem to you, then you may be better off playing blackjack where you don't need to worry about being predictable or fooling other players.

Get Rakeback

This 11th item complements our #1 item: bankroll management is the most important secret to get a better win rate, and the simplest first step to improve your bankroll is to get rakeback. If you have not yet started a rakeback program, learn more here.
Good Luck at the tables.

7 Winning Poker Secrets Revealed

So what does it really take to be a great poker player? Read on and find out what differentiates ‘poker winners’ from ‘poker participants’.

Play tight at the start. In general, it’s best to play a tight game at the start because then you can sit back more and just observe as others play their games and make their mistakes.

Know when to start loosening up your game. Even if you play tight in the beginning, it’s equally important to know WHEN to start playing loose. Why? There are a few reasons to this, two are mentioned below.

As players begin to get eliminated, you need to loosen up your game because blinds come around to you faster. This means that it will become more expensive to fold as the game progresses.

You might be sending the wrong signals to your opponents. If you play too tight for too long, make no mistake, the other players will notice that. The consequence of this is that when you do get a big hand and play it, the other players will not ‘bite’ because they know you will not do so unless you have a good hand. As a result, you will not win big (unless of course, you’re only bluffing you have a good hand).

Practice, practice, practice! Because poker is not a solitary game, it’s imperative that you constantly try to improve your skill. Different poker tournaments have different structures; different players have different game plans; different poker events have different ambiances, and so on. As such you constantly need to practice and be out there so that you’re poker skills are never rusty.

Go in it to WIN. Suprisingly, a lot of poker players say they only play for fun when in fact they really want to win. It’s kind of like not daring to hope or being afraid to win. Well, this is completely the wrong mindset to bring to a poker game! You’ve heard it on more than one occasion that poker is a lot about psychology well guess what… this applies to you too! Go in there with a winning attitude because without it, you’ll only be undermining your own efforts.

Master the art of ‘bluffing’. Everybody knows what bluffing is and that it’s part of playing poker. However, don’t bluff for the sake of bluffing. Remember: bluffs only work in specific situations against specific people! And even then, the ‘success’ of your bluff is partly dependent on how you’ve played your previous hands!

Know when to fold. A lot of poker players are emotionally attached to their bets! Just because you’ve put in that amount of money in the pot doesn’t mean you MUST play your hand else you’ll lose face. You’ll lose money more likely! So try to be detached; assess if you can really win or not and fold when needed.

Spread Out or Specialize? One of the many hot topics on the world of poker is should a player learn all the different poker games and structures or specialize only in one or a few? In the end, it all depends on you: your personality and which game you truly find to be more fun to engage in. However, don’t zero in on one particular poker game before you’ve tried a few.

A lot of players want to specialize in a particular game because of the high stakes and spend years trying to perfect their game only to realize they’re not really exceptional in it. So try out many types of poker games first and only then decide if you want to master many or only specialize in a few.
